Nervous about The Dentist?
Dental Care at Your Pace
If you feel anxious about visiting the dentist, have had a difficult experience in the past or have avoided treatment for a long time, you are welcome here. We will listen, explain and work with you at a pace that feels manageable.
Whatever is worrying you, tell us
You do not need to hide any of these concerns. Knowing what worries you helps us adapt your visit and discuss the support available.
“I haven’t been to the dentist for years.”
“I’m embarrassed about my teeth.”
“I’m worried it will hurt.”
“I’m frightened of needles.”
“I’m worried I will panic.”
“I’ve had a bad experience before.”
What your first visit can look like
- Tell us what you are worried about — when booking or when you arrive.
- Meet the team and talk — your concerns and priorities come first.
- Assessment — we explain what we are doing and why.
- Discuss your options — no treatment plan should feel mysterious or rushed.
- Agree the next step — including additional support or sedation assessment where appropriate.
Conscious sedation
For suitable patients, conscious sedation may help reduce anxiety during dental treatment. You remain conscious and able to respond while feeling more relaxed. Before sedation is offered, we will assess whether it is appropriate for you and explain preparation, monitoring, aftercare and escort requirements.
How we can make visits easier
- Tell us about triggers or previous experiences.
- Ask questions before treatment begins.
- Agree on a signal if you need the clinician to stop.
- Take breaks when clinically appropriate.
- Discuss appointment timing and other practical adjustments.
- Explore conscious sedation if clinically suitable.
Why Tara Martin Dental Care?
Our existing practice philosophy is simple: we treat people, not teeth. That matters particularly for anxious patients. The page should show the team as approachable people and explain that patients will be listened to rather than judged.
FAQs
What if I have not seen a dentist for years?
Please don’t worry. We understand that there are many reasons why someone may not have visited a dentist for a long time, particularly if they feel nervous or anxious about dental treatment.
Your first appointment is an opportunity for us to listen to your concerns, assess your oral health and discuss your options with you. We can take things at a pace that feels manageable and work with you to help you feel more comfortable about visiting the dentist again.
Will I be judged about the condition of my teeth?
No. Our focus is on helping you move forward, not on judging how your teeth have reached their current condition.
We know it can take a lot of courage to make an appointment when you are worried about your teeth or have avoided dental treatment for some time. Whatever your starting point, we will treat you with kindness and respect and talk you through the options available to improve and maintain your oral health.
Can I stop during treatment if I feel overwhelmed?
Yes. We want you to feel in control throughout your appointment. Before treatment begins, we can agree on a simple signal, such as raising your hand, to let us know that you would like us to stop.
What is conscious sedation?
Conscious sedation is a technique that can be used to help particularly nervous or anxious patients feel calmer and more relaxed during dental treatment.
Sedation medication is given to reduce anxiety while allowing you to remain conscious and able to communicate with the dental team. It can make dental treatment feel much more manageable for patients who experience significant dental anxiety or fear.
Will I be asleep during conscious sedation?
No. Conscious sedation is different from a general anaesthetic. You remain conscious during your treatment and are able to respond to and communicate with the dental team.
Your First Step Can Simply Be a Conversation
